LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say the wreckage of a small plane found in foothills of the Angeles National Forest is an aircraft reported missing last week, and the pilot who was the only person aboard did not survive.

The California Civil Air Patrol said in a statement that its members spotted the wreckage from the air in mountainous terrain near Lake Hughes on Wednesday then a ground team got to it on foot. They found no survivors.

Allen Kenitzer of the Federal Aviation Administration says the plane is a Mooney M20J that went missing Jan. 12 during a flight from Tehachapi to Torrance.

No information was released on the pilot’s age or identity.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
