FAIRFIELD, Ala. (AP) - A 17-year-old boy on his way to school has been gunned down in Fairfield.

News outlets report that Fairfield police say Tyron Bennet was shot to death Wednesday morning outside his friend’s home.

Neighbors say Bennett would walk to his friend’s house each morning before both would go to school. Bennett was a sophomore at Fairfield High Preparatory School.

Police are talking to witnesses, who say they heard the gunfire and a car speed away. No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.

Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin say Bennett had no discipline issues at school and made above-average grades.

Neighbors and family friends say Bennett cut grass, raked lawns, washed cars and ran errands for the elderly. He also had a job sweeping at the local barber shop.
