GONZALES, La. (AP) - Workers are cleaning up hydrochloric acid that leaked from a railroad tank car in an industrial area of Ascension Parish.

While authorities say the public isn’t at risk, The Advocate (https://bit.ly/2jCp9Cc ) reports that temporary evacuations and other precautions were taken when the spill occurred late Wednesday.

Chief Deputy Bobby Webre says a tank car split open near where a rail line crosses a road in Gonzales. A worker discovered the leak and notified authorities.

People attending a school career fair near the site were briefly evacuated, but favorable winds helped keep vapors from spreading into other populated areas.

Webre says emergency workers were using foam to control fumes from the spilled hydrochloric acid and another agent to neutralize it.

Exposure to hydrochloric acid can cause choking and severe burns.
