NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - Investigators have determined that a fire at a New Castle apartment complex was the result of arson.

State Fire Marshal’s Office spokesman Michael Chionchio tells local media that investigators are still probing Wednesday’s fire, and that their investigation is criminal in nature.

Eight fire companies responded to the fire around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. Chionchio says the fire started in one unit and spread to two adjacent homes. Crews remained on scene until about 3 a.m.

One person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but no one was seriously injured.

Chionchio says the Red Cross will assist six residents to find temporary housing who were displaced by the fire.

The damage is estimated at $300,000.
