LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a Virginia sheriff’s deputy has been charged with assaulting a female acquaintance in Maryland.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Thursday that 28-year-old Deputy Patrick Campbell turned himself in to members of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland on Wednesday. He was served a citizen-obtained summons for second-degree assault related to an alleged assault of a female acquaintance on Jan. 13. A Frederick County Commissioner also issued a protective order.

Officials say Campbell, who has been with the agency for six years, works in the courts and corrections division. He was placed on routine paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
