COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A man has been charged in the shooting death of a Richland County teen.

A spokeswoman with the sheriff’s department told local media outlets that 20-year-old Nicholas Butler has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting early Sunday.

The coroner’s office says the victim was 17-year-old Jalin Palmer of Columbia.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Katelyn Jasak says officers were called to a home in Elgin and found a teen who had been shot in the upper body.

Jasak says a preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was an accident.

It was not known if Butler has an attorney.
