MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A 26-year-old man has been arraigned in the stabbing deaths of two people in a Lansing-area home.

Manuel Pena appeared Tuesday via video in 55th District Court in Mason. Police say he is charged with two counts of open murder in the slayings of 48-year-old Jeff Ballor and 46-year-old Kristin Pangman.

Pena also faces armed robbery and gun charges. He is being held without bond.

Meridian Township police say Pena was arrested Saturday night, hours after officers discovered the bodies of Ballor and Pangman in a basement.

The Lansing State Journal reports that a detective testified Tuesday that Pena was covered in blood at the time of his arrest.

A Feb. 9 preliminary hearing has been scheduled.

Defense attorney David Feinberg says he will seek a competency evaluation for Pena.
