RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - A volunteer group formed to help Syrian refugees settling in Rutland is holding a vigil.
Organizers say the Saturday afternoon event in Main Street Park is in response to expected presidential executive order that would indefinitely bar those fleeing war-torn Syria from entering the United States, effectively ending the Rutland resettlement program.
The aim of the vigil is to welcome the two Syrian refugee families who have recently arrived in the city.
The Rutland Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2kae63I ) that supporters are asked to “demonstrate respect for all views and Vermonters, and stand in peaceful demonstration for refugees everywhere, and our new neighbors in particular.”
It takes place from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Main Street Park.
