WASHINGTON (AP) - Authorities say a stolen Mercedes SUV crashed into several police cars, injuring one police officer, as the driver tried to flee police.

Media outlets report that officers spotted the SUV early Tuesday in northeast Washington, but hadn’t turned on their emergency lights and sirens to make a stop when the SUV speed off.

Police say the SUV backed into a D.C. police cruiser, then hit several parked cars, including three unmarked Prince George’s County police cruisers. The SUV then hit a traffic signal pole.

Police say nine vehicles, not including the SUV, were damaged.

Police say 25-year-old Michael Burwell is charged with assault on police officers, leaving the scene of an accident, unauthorized use of a vehicle and resisting arrest.
