OLD BRIDGE, N.J. (AP) - Police grabbed a ladder and climbed to a second-floor window to recuse a man from a fire that killed his adult son in Old Bridge.

Authorities say the fire broke out on the first floor of the Judy Court home that 68-year-old Joseph Berna shared with his 80-year-pold father around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Berna was pronounced dead at the scene.

His father is in critical but stable condition in the burn unit at St. Barnabas Medical Center. His name has not been released.

Authorities say the cause is under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious at this time.
