ORANGE, Calif. (AP) - The California Highway Patrol says a suspected drunken driver crashed into a CHP cruiser parked along a freeway, injuring an officer seated inside.

The CHP says the officer had pulled over along southbound State Route 55 in Orange County to help a motorist in a stalled car Monday night.

The officer was sitting in the cruiser on the right shoulder when another vehicle slammed into it from behind. TV news footage showed the cruiser smashed into the guardrail with a crumpled rear end.

The officer was transported to a hospital with moderate-to-minor injuries.

The driver of the car that hit the cruiser was hospitalized with major injuries. The driver is expected to face a DUI charge.
