CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - A 46-year-old Limon man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for fatally stabbing his estranged wife.

Richard Lockett pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder for the July 18, 2015, death of 36-year-old Kirsten Lockett.

Prosecutors say he was under court order to have no contact with his wife or the five children in her care when he kidnapped her and assaulted her at gunpoint July 13, 2015. After the attack, Kirsten Lockett moved with the children - ages 5 to 15 at the time - to her brother’s home in Castle Rock.

Prosecutors say Richard Lockett broke the window in the bedroom where his wife was sleeping with the children. He let the children and his mother-in-law go before stabbing Kirsten Lockett in the neck.

He then tried to slit his throat.
