BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A former Burlington police officer is going to prison for causing a fatal car crash while off duty.
WPTZ-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2ic9pmd ) Leanne Werner was sentenced Wednesday to two to 12 years behind bars for the head-on collision in July 2015 in St. Albans. Prosecutors say her vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a car, killing 74-year-old Omer Martin.
Werner had originally pleaded not guilty to charges of driving under the influence of alcohol with death resulting and other related offenses.
In September, she changed her plea to guilty to amended charges of gross negligent operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm and death resulting. As part of the plea deal, other charges related to driving under the influence were dismissed.
