TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Trenton Mayor Eric Jackson has spoken out against the state Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals regarding an animal cruelty case involving an emaciated puppy.

NJ.com reports (https://bit.ly/2j7OaFW ) the NJSPCA criticized Trenton’s response to the case on Sunday without naming the municipality or the animal control officer involved in the situation.

The animal rights group claimed that an officer first refused to accept the abused dogs on Saturday because of the New Year’s holiday.

NJSPCA officials alleged the town didn’t want to be burdened with the cost of emergency care for the emaciated animal, which they accepted a day later.

Jackson fired back Tuesday, saying the NJSPCA’s version of events “did not happen.” The Democrat called the city’s response timely and appropriate.

The NJSPCA sticks by its story.
