WASHINGTON (AP) - Police say a Washington officer has been injured following a traffic stop that led to a car chase which ended in northern Virginia.

District police say the incident began Wednesday night in southeast Washington, where police tried to make a traffic stop.

During the stop, authorities say the officer had exited the police car when the driver of vehicle pulled over and suddenly backed into the police car. Police say the officer was hurt while trying to get out of the way of the fleeing vehicle.

Police spokesman Officer Hugh Carew says the driver was later stopped by Virginia State Police in the Springfield area.

One unidentified person was arrested. Police say they found a young child inside the vehicle. It is unclear whether the child was injured.
