SLIDELL, La. (AP) - Newly elected Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal has officially taken the department’s reins.

Fandal was sworn in Friday at a ceremony at the city’s Municipal Auditorium. U.S. Marshall Genny May administered the oath of office to Fandal as his relatives, friends and law enforcement officers from the area looked on.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/2jl5yXZ ) reports Fandal is a retired Louisiana State Police lieutenant and former Slidell officer. He defeated former Slidell police Capt. Kevin O’Neill in a Dec. 10 runoff election to complete the remainder of former chief Randy Smith’s term, which runs through June 30, 2018.

Smith was elected St. Tammany Parish sheriff in the fall of 2015 and took office July 1.
