SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Salt Lake man has been sentenced to prison for the death of his girlfriend’s 1-year-old son.

The Deseret News reports that 27-year-old Brian Luther Taylor was sentenced to two concurrent sentences of one to 15 years in prison for the death of Xander Toliver.

Authorities say the child died while in Taylor’s care in December 2014.

Originally charged with murder, Taylor pleaded guilty last October to child abuse homicide.

Taylor also entered an Alford plea to one count of child abuse, also a second-degree felony.

An Alford plea is not an admission of guilt but acknowledges Taylor would likely be convicted by a jury if the case went to trial.

In court documents, Taylor admitted he dropped his girlfriend’s baby on his head, inflicting fatal brain trauma.
