PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A man withdrew his guilty plea at the last minute in the death of a 4-month-old Florida infant and instead wants to take his case to trial.
The Pensacola News Journal reports that 21-year-old Christopher Demitchie Harris was supposed to be sentenced Friday but instead asked to withdraw his plea. Harris told a judge he felt pressured to plead guilty by his mother but insists he is innocent.
Harris is charged with first-degree murder in the death May 2015 death of infant Jehmier Booker, who authorities say was in Harris’ care at the time. Officials say the infant died of blunt force trauma.
The previous plea agreement recommended at least a 30-year prison sentence for Harris, who now could get a life sentence. No new trial date is set.
