BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama-based rehabilitation provider HealthSouth Corp. is changing its name.

A statement issued Monday says HealthSouth will become Encompass Health Corp. effective Jan. 2.

HealthSouth chief executive Mark Tarr says the rebranding reflects the company’s commitment to a seamless system of health care in both in-patient and home settings.

The statement says the name change is expected to cost between $25 million and $30 million. The company plans to keep its headquarters in Birmingham, where a new home office is scheduled to open in early 2018.

HealthSouth is one of the largest U.S. providers of post-acute health care services. It operates in 36 states and Puerto Rico.

HealthSouth survived a massive health fraud scandal in the early 2000s that resulted in the ouster of founder Richard Scrushy.
