BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police in Burlington, Vermont, have identified the swimmer who died after being pulled from Lake Champlain.

Police said 17-year-old Christian Kibabu, of Burlington, was swimming with friends to a tower structure in the lake at Oakledge Park on Monday when he became fatigued and went underwater. Police say his friends tried to help but were too fatigued to recover him.

Police got a call around 4:25 p.m.

Divers found the swimmer and started administering CPR. Kibabu was taken to UVM Medical Center, but was later pronounced dead.

The Burlington High School says Kibabu, who was entering his senior year, was a beloved student, friend, teammate and member of the school community. Counseling support is being offered to students and community members at the high school this week and a ceremony is being planned to honor Kibabu’s life.
