CONGRESS, Ariz. (AP) - Yavapai County Sheriff’s officials say a man has died after being attacked by a swarm of bees.

They say the incident occurred about 1 p.m. Tuesday between the communities of Hillside and Congress.

The property owner told sheriff’s deputies the man was doing road-clearing work for her with a backhoe.

Investigators say the backhoe may have disturbed a hive, causing the bees to swarm and attack.

The property owner went outside to check on the worker when she could no longer hear the backhoe operating.

She found the man on the ground and called 911.

Authorities say the man was covered in bees and was dead at the scene.

The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

The man’s name is being withheld until his relatives are notified.
