HEDWIG VILLAGE, Texas (AP) - Investigators say the son of a maid who formerly worked for a 79-year-old Houston-area woman found slain has been charged with the killing.

Records show 55-year-old Michael Susberry of Houston was being held without bond Wednesday on a capital murder charge in the death of Janeil Bernard.

Hedwig Village police say Bernard’s ex-maid found her body July 3 at the victim’s home. Police believe robbery was the motive for the fatal stabbing and beating.

Police say Bernard, who lived most of her life in upscale Hedwig Village, kept paying her maid even after the housekeeper retired. Police Chief David Gott says Susberry would sometimes would stop at Bernard’s home to pick up his mother’s monthly check.

Online records don’t list an attorney to speak for Susberry.
