FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina woman has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities found dead and malnourished cats inside her mobile home.

Media outlets report that Lou Ann Cain was charged Wednesday on three counts of cruelty to animals. A statement from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says she was released from jail under the condition that she appear in court.

Deputies found three cats inside Cain’s mobile home on Monday. One of the cats was ill and had to be euthanized. At least one other cat was found dead.

Lt. Sean Swain says it’s possible more dead animals are inside the home. Deputies had to stop their investigations due to biohazards.

A building inspector condemned the mobile home on Tuesday.

It’s unclear if Cain has an attorney.
