COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) - A southwest Iowa hospital has joined a national campaign that encourages bystanders to assist in a bleeding emergency.

CHI Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs received a more than $25,000 grant from the Loess Hills Health Care Coalition to take part in the Stop The Bleed campaign, The Daily Nonpareil (https://bit.ly/2ta78Bt ) reported.

Barb Roenfeld is the hospital’s director of emergency services. She said the hospital will teach area health care workers how to train nonmedical people on how to stop serious bleeding in an emergency. So far, the training has focused on people with medical backgrounds but future training will include nonmedical personnel at the hospital, such as security staff and registration desk workers, she said.

Someone can die in as little as five minutes from uncontrolled bleeding, CHI Health said in a news release.

“The No. 1 cause of preventable death in trauma is uncontrolled bleeding,” said Nikki Rauth, supervisor of trauma and EMS services at the hospital.

Knowing how to stop serious bleeding is the equivalent of knowing how to perform CPR, Roenfeld said.

The national campaign began after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Roenfeld said.

“There was a real recognition that, when you have a mass casualty event, law enforcement and paramedics can’t get there right away,” she said.

The campaign was created by National Security Council staff and the White House, the hospital press release said.

The hospital is looking into partnering with the Council Bluffs Community School District, Iowa Western Community College and the Mid-America Center on the project, Roenfeld said.
