NEW ORLEANS (AP) - An autopsy shows a 40-year-old inmate who died after falling ill at the Orleans Parish jail had liver disease and heart problems.

Orleans Parish coroner’s office spokesman James Melancon said Friday the cause of Jason Piece’s death remains under investigation. He said preliminary autopsy results found no visible trauma.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office said Pierce died Wednesday at a hospital after suffering a seizure at the jail. He had been booked Tuesday on four counts of burglary and theft.

Pierce’s mother, Peggy Paisant, told NOLA.com/ The Times-Picayune her son had struggled for years with drug addiction. But she said he was a loving father to his four children.
