LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Mary Charlene Staats, the wife of longtime Associated Press executive Ed Staats, has died after battling Alzheimer’s disease. She was 78.

Charlene Staats supported her husband’s four decades-long career as a reporter, editor and administrator for the AP. Her husband was appointed in 1984 as the AP’s Kentucky bureau chief, a position he held until retiring in 2002. Staats also previously served as the bureau chief in Albany, New York, for seven years.

Charlene, a native of Texas, earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas, where she and her husband met.



The couple remained in the Louisville area after his retirement, and traveled to several countries together including Egypt, Jordan, Tibet, China and Zimbabwe.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at Pewee Valley Presbyterian church.
