Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington has died of an apparent suicide, TMZ reported Thursday. He was 41 years old.

Law enforcement sources told the celebrity gossip website that Mr. Bennington hanged himself at a private residence in Palos Verdes Estates in Los Angeles County. His body was reportedly discovered just before 9 a.m. Thursday.

Mr. Bennington is survived his wife, Talinda, and his six children.

TMZ reported that the singer battled drug and alcohol addiction for years and has said before that he had suicidal thoughts, stemming from abuse he suffered as a child.

Mr. Bennington was a close friend of former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, who also hanged himself on May 18. Cornell would have turned 53 today.

Mr. Bennington also toured with Stone Temple Pilots as the band’s frontman after their split with Scott Weiland, who died in 2015 from an accidental drug overdose.
