GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A homeless Mississippi man charged with aggravated assault is now facing a murder count after the victim died.

Local news outlets report 31-year-old James Christopher Woodard was originally charged after Gulfport police say he assaulted a man July 14 at a homeless camp. Woodard is now charged with second degree murder after police were told on Sunday the victim died.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove tells local media he is withholding the victim’s name pending next of kin notification.

Police Sgt. Joshua Bromen says Woodard was held Tuesday night at a county facility when detectives served Woodard an arrest warrant for the murder.

Woodard’s bond is set at $1 million. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
