JASPER, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama sheriff says that a longtime jailer admitted to selling drugs and has been arrested.

AL.com reports that Walker County Sheriff Jim Underwood says 53-year-old Albert Lacy Steadman was fired and taken into custody as he arrived for work on Wednesday. Steadman is charged with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. He had been a corrections officer for 16 years.

Charging documents claim that Steadman was selling acetaminophen and hydrocodone. Authorities say they have no indication that Steadman was selling or giving away drugs at the jail.

Underwood says that an informant confirmed recent suspicions about Steadman. Underwood says “We set it up, and let (the informant) make a purchase at Albert’s home.”

Steadman was released from the county jail after posting a $30,000 bond. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
