ERWIN, N.C. (AP) - The bodies of two teenagers have been pulled from the Cape Fear River in North Carolina.

WRAL-TV reports the Harnett County Fire Department and EMS responded to Cape Fear River Park around 6:45 p.m. Sunday night. The bodies of 15-year-old Donovan Sutton and 16-year-old Steven McNeil were found around 9 p.m.

Authorities say the boys were swimming with two friends when they decided to swim across the river. The two friends swum ahead and noticed Sutton and McNeil were struggling, so they went back, but were pulled under. They escaped the water and called for help.

Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats says the area is popular for swimming. He says the water is calm, and 6-10 feet (2-3 meters) deep where they were swimming. Authorities are trying to determine what went wrong.
