ELKO, Nevada (AP) - A Nevada woman is facing up to six years in prison after a jury convicted her of putting her newborn baby in a garbage bag and leaving her in a car trunk.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports (https://bit.ly/2uOnoHg) that 23-year-old Nikki Shelley was found guilty of one felony count of willful child abuse, neglect or endangerment after her grandmother discovered the baby in the trunk while Shelley was at a hospital.

Prosecutors say Shelley gave birth in a bathroom at home, wrapped the baby in towels and put her in a trash bag in May 2016. Authorities say a friend drove her to a hospital where she told staff she’d miscarried.

Defense attorney Benjamin Gaumond says she thought the baby had died, and didn’t intend any harm to the child.
