ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An Arizona man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a tribal police officer during a traffic stop in New Mexico.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Mexico says 33-year-old Michael Nakai of Red Rock pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in Albuquerque to assaulting a federal officer.

According to a criminal complaint, Nakai kicked a Navajo Nation police officer in the face as Nakai was being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

He had been stopped near the intersection of U.S. 491 and Navajo Route 36 in San Juan County on Oct. 9, 2016.

The office says up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced.
