FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The University of Arkansas doesn’t plan to sell alcohol at intercollegiate sporting events despite new state-issued alcohol permits that allow the sales.

Large-attendance facility permits were approved last month for concessionaire Levy Premium Foodservice LP, a new concession vendor for the university. The rules took effect Saturday, but the university said it has no current plans to sell alcohol at three of its four arenas, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/2tMCpda ).

The change technically means alcohol can be sold at Bud Walton Arena, Baum Stadium, Barnhill Arena and Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. But the school said it only plans on allowing alcohol sales at indoor “club” areas at Razorback Stadium. The university said net sales of alcohol in those club areas totaled to $143,150 in 2016.

University spokesman Kevin Trainor said there are “no current plans” to sell alcohol at the other three venues, which host basketball, baseball, and gymnastics and volleyball events. He noted that the Southern Conference forbids alcohol sales in general seating and public areas at on-campus sporting venues at schools in the athletic conference.

But he said Wednesday that the university “reserves the right for approval” of alcohol consumption on campus for non-athletic events with concessions or catering at the venues.

“The option to sell alcohol would be available for those events through our new concessions/catering partner, Levy,” Trainor said.

Each facility permit costs $2,500, while catering permits cost $500, according to Mary Casteel, director of the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Division.
