PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s House Speaker is blaming his counterpart in the Senate for the state’s budget impasse.

House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello said in an interview on WPRO-AM (https://bit.ly/2tWmHwB ) Thursday he doesn’t plan to reconvene his chamber until next year and that the Senate should pass the House version of the $9.2 billion state budget.

The Cranston Democrat said he had at least three meals with Senate President Dominick Ruggerio in the final week of the session and the Senate’s changes to the plan to phase out municipal car taxes were never mentioned.

Ruggerio, in an op-ed issued by his office Thursday, countered that he’s consistently expressed concerns about the “sustainability” of plan.

The North Providence Democrat said Mattiello should reconvene the House to address the budget and other pending legislation.
