MARBLEHEAD, Mass. (AP) - Some of the planet’s most decorated sailboats are getting ready to duke it out on the high seas.
A competitive international fleet of boats will be at the starting line for the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race. The 363-mile (584-kilometer) race dates to 1905 and is billed as the “granddaddy of ocean races.”
Seventy-six boats will set off Sunday from Marblehead, Massachusetts, en route to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Top competitors include the 68-foot (21-meter) yacht Prospector out of New York, which won this year’s Miami to Montego Bay race.
Other contenders include the Ticonderoga, a 72-foot (22-meter) wooden ketch out of Greenwich, Connecticut; and the Warrior, a 70-foot (21.3-meter) Volvo out of New Orleans’ Southern Yacht Club.
It’s the 37th sailing of the biennial race.
