WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Defense attorneys want to delay a murder trial in North Carolina because they say a former police officer who collected evidence is involved in a state investigation.
The StarNews of Wilmington reports (https://bit.ly/2r63PpS ) lawyers for James Bradley say they need more time to investigate evidence processed by Wilmington police evidence technician Michele Mahamadou.
Bradley’s trial in the killing of 54-year-old Shannon Rippy Van Newkirk is set to begin Monday. She hasn’t been seen since April 2014 and her body has not been found.
Mahamadou was cleared of wrongdoing in a 2015 state investigation into mishandling of fingerprint cards. Wilmington Police say she resigned from the force on June 1.
Court records show Mahamadou collected a bloodstain that linked Bradley to a different killing.
