MANDAN, N.D. (AP) - Morton County officials say all jail inmates have been transferred to the new combined Burleigh/Morton County Detention Center in Bismarck.

The new 213,000-square-foot facility can hold 525 inmates with a capacity to expand to 1,000. The $70 million jail was funded by a temporary half-percent sales tax approved by voters in 2014.

Authorities say the new facility will help arresting officers compete their paperwork in a timely manner while others complete the booking process.

Twelve Morton County Detention Center employees have transferred to the new detention facility while other staff members have taken positions within the sheriff’s department. The Morton County facility will only allow inmates to be held up to eight hours as they await transport or court appearances.
