PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Philadelphia man has been jailed on charges he was under the influence when his vehicle struck and killed a woman who died trying to protect her children from being hit.

Twenty-eight-year-old Rosa Lydia Rojas was killed in the crash about 8:45 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses tell police she was walking with her 11-year-old daughter, Leani, and 9 year old son, Jadiyn, when a vehicle driven by Ryan McHugh jumped the curb and came toward them. Police say Rojas pushed her daughter to safety, but died trying to shield her son who was also injured.

Police believe the 39-year-old driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Online court records don’t list an attorney for McHugh, who faces a preliminary hearing.

Rojas‘ son remains hospitalized with broken bones and a head injury.
