SLOATSBURG, N.Y. (AP) - New York State Police say they’ve charged a New Jersey truck driver in the hit-and-run death of a 54-year-old man who was killed on the Thruway in New York City’s northern suburbs.

Troopers say a Paul Peacock, of New York City, was hit on Interstate 87’s southbound lanes around 4 a.m. Sunday near the Ramapo service area in the Rockland County village of Sloatsburg.

Police say the vehicle that struck Peacock didn’t stop. Troopers haven’t determined yet why he was on the highway.

Troopers say Monday that the tractor-trailer that hit Peacock was located later Sunday in a truck stop along Route 17 in Mahwah, New Jersey. They charged the driver, 59-year-old Scott Spooner, of Vineland, New Jersey, with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.

Spooner’s public defender wasn’t available for comment.
