GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi man faces upgraded charges after authorities say he fatally shot another man in the head.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2sl9Xie ) that Harrison County Prosecutor Herman Cox asked that an initial charge of aggravated assault against 19-year-old David Nicholas Ryals be upgraded to murder on Monday. The change in charges comes after 21-year-old Blake Anthony Carroll died after being airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center.

Carroll’s girlfriend, Alexis Sanders, told responding investigators that she was fighting with another woman outside a house when the shooting started.

A sworn statement from sheriff’s Investigator Neal Allen says Ryals admitted to having shot at Carroll. Another man, 19-year-old Brandon Lee Dandrea, faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence in connection with the fight.

Ryals has requested a court-appointed attorney.
