LOS ANGELES (AP) - An 18-year-old man remains in critical condition after being shot last week by Los Angeles police following a fight with officers in a residential driveway.

Chief Charlie Beck told police commissioners Tuesday that one officer suspected Pedro Echeverria had a gun during the struggle that preceded the June 8 shooting.

Echeverria began to run and then turned toward the officers, Beck said, prompting police to fire.

Beck did not say why officers initially stopped Echeverria but said Echeverria had recently been arrested for having a gun.

The chief said during the encounter an officer noticed a bulge in his shorts in an area where a gun could be hidden.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/2s16HHy ) Echeverria was in critical condition Tuesday.

Officials say police body cameras fell off during the struggle and did not capture the actual shooting.
