WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - One of the children a Pennsylvania mother is accused of having tried to kill in an alleged murder-suicide attempt says that while he heard his mother say she wanted to kill herself, she didn’t want to harm them.
Luzerne County authorities say 33-year-old Melissa Ann Scholl drove the 7-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl to a parking lot in December 2015 and strung a hose from the exhaust pipe to a window.
The boy testified Wednesday that his mother wanted his grandparents to come for the children because she “didn’t want to harm us in any way.” Defense attorney Larry Kansky called her actions a cry for help.
Assistant District Attorney Angela Sperrazza said the boy never told prosecutors that before. She called Scholl’s actions part of a “calculated” murder-suicide plan.
