PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) - A West Virginia man has been indicted in the overdose death of his mother.
The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports (https://bit.ly/2rnoHJq ) that 44-year-old Bradford Spencer was indicted on multiple charges including first-degree murder during the June session of the Mercer County Grand Jury. Spencer was arrested after 65-year-old Virginia Spencer died in January.
Bluefield Police Detective J.B. Fox testified in March that Spencer told him he had given his mother eight pain pills in less than eight hours at her request, because she was in severe pain.
Responders had found Spencer intoxicated and passed out when they arrived. Investigators later learned that Spencer had a $100,000 life insurance policy on his mother.
Spencer’s attorney David Kelley said that his client wanted to alleviate his mother’s suffering, not end her life.
