HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a Brooklyn robbery suspect fleeing police on Long Island drove the wrong way and crashed into an oncoming car, killing his passenger and her unborn child.
Police say 28-year-old Courtney Corbett was arraigned Monday on charges of manslaughter, assault and reckless driving. His attorney told Newsday he worked as a janitor for the New York City Housing Authority.
Police say Corbett was fleeing in a vehicle following a report of a robbery at a cosmetic store in Manhasset on Sunday when he drove the wrong way onto an LIE exit ramp, striking a vehicle.
Corbett was arrested at the scene. His front seat passenger, who was six months pregnant, was taken to a hospital where she and her unborn child were pronounced dead. Several others were injured.
