MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - Police say passers-by took two small children into a pizza place and called officers for help after their father walked away from them on a busy street in New Hampshire.

Police said the children were ages 4 and 5. One begged him to come back as he walked away in Manchester on Saturday. Witnesses said he was walking at a brisk pace and didn’t seem to be paying attention to them.

Officers later found Vito Paulino. They said he appeared to be staggering. WMUR-TV reports police found he had a small glass pipe. He was arrested on charges of endangering the welfare of a child. It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer and a phone number couldn’t be found for him.

The children were placed with another relative.
