AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Highway funds appear to be another victim of stalled budget negotiations in Maine.

Democratic Rep. Andrew McLean said Tuesday that lawmakers have set aside a two-year-plan to provide $1.3 billion for roads and bridges, choosing instead to focus on reaching a deal for the overall budget. The highway budget includes local road assistance, rehabilitation of roads and bridges and federal money for construction projects.

Republican Sen. Ron Collins on Tuesday said that passing the highway fund would show the public that lawmakers can “actually work together.” But McLean said that lawmakers can’t pass the highway fund budget until they know the outcome of Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s $6.8 billion, two-year proposal.

Collins and McLean are both chairs of the Legislature’s joint transportation committee.
