WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - A Worcester man has been acquitted of a murder charge in a 2014 shooting death that authorities say was gang-related.
Telegram & Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/2rNzqAX ) that a jury found 24-year-old Fathi Jaara not guilty Tuesday in Worcester Superior Court.
Prosecutors said Jaara helped orchestrate a plan to kill 19-year-old Christian Obeng, an alleged member of a rival gang. Authorities say Obeng was shot in the back of the head outside an apartment in October 2014.
Jaara’s attorney argued his client was only present during an argument that happened before the gunfire. He told jurors it wasn’t clear who fired the first shot and that there’d be no evidence to show Jaara knew the shooter had a gun.
The man who prosecutors alleged fired the shots was acquitted last December.
