ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) - A 14-year-old boy has been charged with battery and recklessness after a 5-year-old boy was shot in the back of the head with an air rifle in central Indiana, leaving a pellet lodged in his brain.
The Herald Bulletin reports (https://bit.ly/2spK1Rg ) a hearing is scheduled July 7 after the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office filed formal charges against the teen.
Authorities say Bentley Chesnut was shot June 2 in Anderson while riding with family in a golf cart and was later released from a hospital.
Authorities say the 14-year-old told police during a meeting where his parents were present that he shot the child, but later reportedly denied involvement. Police say a rifle-style air gun that can be pumped and fired multiple times in quick succession was used in the shooting.
