COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Republicans and Democrats have maintained their balance in the South Carolina House after two special elections to fill vacant seats.
Democrat Wendy Brawley of Hopkins easily won Tuesday’s special election to replace the late representative Joe Neal. She received 78 percent of the vote against Republican Bill Strickland of Sumter. The district covers parts of Richland and Sumter counties. Neal died suddenly in February.
In York County, Republicans held onto the seat that former state Rep. Ralph Norman gave up for his campaign for the 5th Congressional district.
Former Sheriff Bruce Bryant of Lake Wylie defeated Democrat Bebs Barron Chorak for the open seat.
Norman was elected Tuesday to replace U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney, now the White House budget director.
The election results will be certified later this week.
