ST. MARTIN, Miss. (AP) - A man is accused of stabbing his son in the back when the 24-year-old stepped in to defend his mother during a domestic dispute with her husband.

WLOX-TV reports 45-year-old Franky Lee Wingate, of Latimer, faces two counts of domestic violence by aggravated assault.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell says deputies responded about 8:15 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators say Wingate and his wife were arguing, and Wingate pulled a knife to stop the woman from leaving. Capt. Randy Muffley says that’s when the son stepped in to defend his mother, and a scuffle ensued.

Ezell says Wingate stabbed his son in the back. Wingate was also injured in the fight.

Wingate and his son were both taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
